Thora

Thora was always chosen to play the goal keep position in her school netball teams because she was considerably taller than every player in her school. This meant she was an imposing, impassable obstacle. Eventually though, when she stopped growing but her peers didn’t, she lost her natural height advantage. Undaunted, as a young adult, she experimented with various protruding but still regulation hair stylings that, coated in sufficient hairspray, formed large difficult-to-get-around but perfectly solid obstructions. One problem with this was she couldn’t then get her netball bib over her rock-solid hairdo at the beginning or end of the game, so she was forced to turn up to games fully kitted up and stay in her uniform till she got home to deconstruct her hairdo. A remote-control car hobbyist friend got around this problem by adapting her hairdo to remotely expand or shrink, or even change direction. This worked fine most of the time, unless games were held at the courts near the model boating pond and there were boats on the same frequency as her hair.

Thora is also an articulated ceramic wall puppet and she is modelled by hand in stoneware clay, twice fired, decorated with ceramic glazes, and finished with a cold glaze. She is approximately 32 cm long, and can hang on the wall by nail, hook or tack. Here she is pictured with her friend Gregory, a mayoral hopeful, who has promised Thora he will restrict the RC frequencies on boating lakes if elected.
